I felt the *same* way after hearing Gore. I couldn't believe he got to the chapter about the importance of information and then skipped over it! Argh! So frustrating....

Well said. I completely agree... this is something I encounter frequently as I attend conferences related to design, interfaces, information architecture, instructional design, information literacy, libraries, and UX... there's such great disconnect between our various worlds.

I did attend a spectacular unconference this year, InfoCamp that really did a great job of pulling together these not-so-disparate fields. Definitely not an ALA event, but I hear that interest is growing...so maybe it's time to encourage someone in your area (you!) to host an InfoCamp and bring it all together?

I will say that Jim Rettig's ALA Unconference last year was actually my favorite piece of ALA in all of 2009.

I think you got it exactly right, Melissa: "We need futurists, philosophers, economists, designers, and technologists to speak at our conferences." I also think that we need to start going to their conferences. For example, one of my colleagues was lamenting the lack of library involvement in the Mobile World Congress . With so many folks accessing information via cell phones, why aren't librarians a part of the discussion about how to do that?
